Warning: The AnyBurn step will blow away the running OS
This is a summary of the steps detailed in this video:
Turn Your Windows into a Bootable ISO from the Vital Tech Helper YouTube channel.
Tools needed:
Rufus (Portable version is fine) AnyBurn (Free version) Windows 11 Distribution ISO from the Windows 11 official download site
More problematic than expected. I wanted to do an image backup of the new noname min that I picked up. In recovery mode, I does not provide the Command Prompt option. The reason that this has to be done in Recovery Mode is because the C drive is obviously open and the dism utility needs to access it in exclusive mode. I booted from a Windows10 install key and got what I wanted. Along the way I discovered that the AMI boot order setup is not very straight forward.
- Download the above components
- Install AnyBurn
- Restart machine holding down the left shift key to boot into the recovery console
- Go to Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Command Prompt
- Run Notepad and open This PC. Any drive can be the source. The Target needs to have sufficient space to hold the ISO. Note both drive letters and close Notepad
- Enter the following command, modifying the source, target and names as desired:
dism /Capture-Image /CaptureDir:C:\ /ImageFile:D:\Win11Backup.wim /Name:"Windows11Backup" /Compress:max - When completed, close the command prompt and click Continue from the Recovery Console
- Windows will boot normally
- Open AnyBurn and select Edit Image File
- Browse to the Windows 11 ISO file downloaded originally
- Locate and remove the file named install.wim
- Rename the file created in step 6 to install.wim
- Click Add, browse to the install.wim file and click the Add button
- Click Next and select where save the new ISO renaming along the way
- Exit AnyBurn and remove any extra files created in the process
